Literature On Foraging
So I'll explain the 4 books on foraging that I own (I only owned the last 2 up until a couple days ago!) and how they've helped me.
In my opinion it's good to have one specific to your area, not specifically your county but the type of environment e.g. seaside, city, woodland etc., one thorough encyclopedic book, and one with some inspiration for cooking etc.
The New Wildcrafted Cuisine, Pascal Baudar
Wild food bible and an absolute must read for keen foragers. It has everything from making your own herbal brews to preserving and even a section on edible insects. Incredible cooking ideas, this book has so much inspiration.
Edible Wild Plants & Herbs, Pamela Michael
Basically a beautifully illustrated mini encyclopedia with some really great recipe ideas. I stumbled upon a carragheen bath gel recipe that I really want to try!
This book is down to earth and stunning.
Food For Free, Richard Mabey
Foraging classic- tonnes of species listed including trees, widflowers, sea shore goodies, mushrooms and seaweed. I'm not a huge fan of using illustrations to identify plants but this book is an exception because of the vast amount of information it packs. Some basic recipes included too.
Wild Food Foraging in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Rachel Lambert
Always have a book specific to your area, this one is a brilliant find. It only lists a few plants and seaweeds but it's got the common ones covered- an excellent beginners guide. Beautiful clear photos and some nice recipes too.
